County Councillor’s Report for the

Parish Council Meeting
30th April 2001

Tonight I will begin by updating you on a number of outstanding projects in the Parish.

Bus Shelter Nr. Holbury Church – Long Lane

At last some definitive news on the bus shelter at Holbury. Provided that the weather does not put another spoke in the wheel, contractors will be starting work on the concrete base for the bus shelter tomorrow. The new shelter has already arrived and as soon as the base is prepared and dried out, the shelter will be erected and the people of Holbury will have a drier wait for their bus.

Road Safety on the Fawley By-Pass

At the last Parish Council Meeting I reported that Hampshire County Council was preparing details to provide gateway features on the Fawley By-Pass to emphasise the start of the 40 mph speed limit in each direction. By now, most of you should have noticed that the work on the ground has now started. Inevitably the scheme will not satisfy everyone but I am quite sure that these measures, together with the more positive traffic enforcement should provide some noticeable improvement in the quality of life for those living close to the by-pass.

Fawley Square Millennium Project and School Road Traffic Calming

I think it is now appropriate to couple the School Road traffic-calming scheme with the Fawley Millennium project, as the two schemes will complement each other for the benefit of everyone in Fawley. The latest situation is that the District Council is currently preparing a draft design for comments by the County Council and the Parish Council. There will be a public consultation with the local traders and the residents of School Road and all the comments received at the last public consultation will be taken into consideration. Funding has been identified in this financial year’s budget and therefore I am hopeful that by this time next year, we will all be looking forward to a vastly improved centre to Fawley Village.

Calshot Activities Centre

I know there have been some concerns regarding the Schneider Hangar at Calshot. I thought it might be helpful if I confirmed the current position. The Leader announced in his budget speech that provision had been made for the repairs to the hangar and that the County Council is fully committed to bringing the hangar back into use as soon as possible. £½ million has been made available to repair the roof after it was made unsafe by the tornado at Calshot just over a year ago and we are hopeful that, subject to negotiations with a contractor, the work could commence next month.
